DREADMOOR Monsters and Bosses: What We Know

Every creature confirmed in DREADMOOR so far, from ghouls and Harpooners to the tentacles that attack your boat, plus the boss question.

Last Updated: 2026-10-30

Quick answer: The demo confirms ghouls on land, Harpooners and other predatory fish in the water, and giant tentacles that attack the boat at night. There is no named boss fight in the demo. The store promises more monsters on sea and land for Early Access.

Demo build

This list covers demo v0.3.39 only. Early Access adds a full region and, presumably, its own apex creatures.

DREADMOOR night attack with a tentacle rising beside the boat

DREADMOOR is not a monster-hunting game, but it is not a pure fishing sim either (the free demo shows both sides). The creatures are part of the survival loop: they gate resources, punish greed and make night travel a decision rather than a formality. Dream Dock frames the tension around fog, silence and distance, and the creatures are the sharp end of that design.

"Face monsters twisted by the catastrophe in real-time confrontations on water and on land." — DREADMOOR on Steam

Confirmed creatures

Creature Type Threat How to handle
Ghoul Land Melee Axe, keep distance, back off
Harpooner Predatory fish Bait theft, carcass quest Slow lure retrieve, reinforced line
Sharp Fin Predatory fish Minor Standard predator technique
Giant tentacle Boat attack Hull damage Keep moving, stay inside
Betsy Giant crab None (shopkeeper) Friendly; do not attack
Giant turtle Transport None Scripted travel
Spitting coral Hazard Damage Avoid the spray, time crossings
Blight fog Environmental hazard Damage over time Mask/medicine, leave the area

The demo's creature list is short but each entry has a clear role. Ghouls teach melee; Harpooners teach predatory fishing; tentacles teach night risk; coral teaches environmental timing.

Land threats

Ghouls

Ghouls are the demo's basic land enemy. One has an axe in its head when you meet it, which tells you most of what you need to know: they were people, and they are not anymore.

Combat is simple. Swing the axe, back off before the counter, repeat. Do not trade hits; your health does not regenerate quickly. If two ghouls group up, retreat to a narrow spot or leave.

The serrated axe edge upgrade makes this faster. It is optional, but the demo's forced encounters are less tedious with it.

Spitting coral

Coral is not a creature, but it behaves like one. The spitting variety launches projectiles when you get close. Time your crossings and do not stand still.

The glowing coral on Angler's Island is a different, harmless resource. Do not assume every coral patch is safe.

Water threats

Predatory fish

Harpooners and Sharp Fins are the demo's water predators. They do not attack you directly; they take the lure and fight hard. The danger is line tension and wasted bait.

The predatory minigame is a slow retrieve. Cast past the splash, hold left mouse, add small tugs. Too fast and the fish cannot catch up; too slow and it loses interest. The fishing guide covers the timing.

Harpooner carcasses are valuable: three of them buy the engine carburettor. That makes the predator loop worth learning even if you dislike the minigame.

Giant tentacles

The tentacles are the demo's scariest water threat. They attack the boat at night, damage the hull and can throw the player around.

They are not killable in the demo. The correct response is escape: keep the boat moving, stay away from the rail, retreat to the cabin. Hull protection buys you the seconds you need.

Betsy and the turtle

Not every giant creature is hostile. Betsy is a giant crab who hosts the general store; the turtle is a transport. DREADMOOR's world is strange enough that "giant creature" does not automatically mean "fight".

Are there bosses in DREADMOOR?

No named boss appears in the demo. The closest thing is the giant tentacle, which is an escape encounter rather than a health-bar fight.

The store's promise of "monsters twisted by the catastrophe" and the Early Access region suggest bosses will come. The demo's ending teaser shows the drowned world beyond the Throat, which is the obvious place for an apex creature.

For now, do not trust any guide that lists named bosses with health bars and loot tables. The demo does not contain them.

Combat tips

  • Axe first. It is the reliable weapon; the grappling hook is a utility tool.
  • Fight on land, flee on water. The boat is not a combat platform.
  • Keep healing items hot. The demo is generous with food; use it.
  • Do not fight near water. A knockback can put you in the death zone.
  • Use the environment. Doorways and narrow paths stop ghouls from surrounding you.

The controls page lists the combat bindings.

What Early Access may add

  • More predatory fish tiers.
  • Named apex creatures in the new region.
  • Harpoon combat against large monsters.
  • Blight-infected variants.
  • Night-only hunters.

Treat this as informed speculation based on the store copy and the demo's ending, not confirmed content.
