DREADMOOR Beginner Guide: First Hours Walkthrough
A spoiler-light DREADMOOR beginner guide: what to do first, which materials to grab, how to fish, and the mistakes that waste your opening hours.
Quick answer: Loot the starting shack, take the axe and grappling hook, never walk into deep water, tune the radio to reach the traders, catch five Snapper with earthworms, then repair John's still to unlock the dry dock. Do not sell metal or coral.
This guide follows demo v0.3.39. Early Access will change the opening, but the survival rules should stay.

DREADMOOR's opening is deliberately slow, and the free demo is the best place to learn it. You wake up in a shack, your brother is dead, and the game gives you a few materials and a boat. The first hour is about unlearning the urge to sprint into water.
"Take the helm of your fishing trawler and navigate the remains of a world flooded by a catastrophic human mistake." — DREADMOOR on Steam
Step 1: Loot the shack
Before you leave, pick up:
- Metal plate — for the first lure and repairs.
- Coral fibre — for the still and hull work.
- Rope — for tools and repairs.
- The axe — pull it from the ghoul's head outside.
- The grappling hook — your second tool.
Equip the axe with 1 and the grappling hook with 2. The hook is for traversal, not combat.
Search every container. The opening area is generous, and the materials save you a later trip.
Step 2: Do not touch the water
Water on foot is instant death. Not damage, not a swim animation — death.
The boat is your respawn point. If you fall in, you respawn at the boat, which may be far from your body. Treat every shoreline as a cliff edge.
There is no crouch and no sprint in the demo. You cannot jump your way out of a bad angle. Walk carefully.
If you see a tempting shortcut across a shallow-looking channel, do not take it. The game does not care how shallow it looks.
Step 3: Tune the radio
The radio is your introduction to Gil and Boza, the traders at Betsy & Sons. Tune it until the dialogue starts.
This is not optional flavour. As Dream Dock sets up, the world is divided and trust is fragile; the traders give you the essence injection, the first quest and access to the store. The injection also creates a debt, which is the game's first long-term goal.
Listen to the dialogue. It explains the Sea Blight, the mutation and why you need to keep working.
Step 4: Catch five Snapper
Your first fishing quest is five Snapper under the pier. Use earthworms — they are free and infinite at the bait spot.
The technique:
- Cast into a splash zone.
- Wait for the bite.
- Hold right mouse.
- Keep the rod in the green with A/D.
- Pull against the fish.
- Reel when it tires.
- Press F to land.
Snapper are peaceful and forgiving. If you lose one, recast. The fishing guide has the full timing breakdown.
Step 5: Process the catch
Take the Snapper to the grinder. You get fish meat; Softgazer also gives chromatic scales.
Feed fish meat to the fuel larva at the pump to make boat fuel. This is the loop: fish → meat → fuel → range → more fish.
Do not burn every fish. Keep some to sell and some to eat.
Step 6: Repair John's still
John the Fifth owns the dry dock key. He will not help until his moonshine still works.
Bring:
- Coral fibre from Angler's Island.
- Adhesive slime from blue-slime beetles behind the trading post.
- Iron barrels from the settlement.
The beetles are easiest at night. The coral regrows in 2–3 days, so harvest a full stack.
Once the still runs, John opens the dry dock. That unlocks the engine and hull upgrades, which unlock the rest of the map.
Step 7: Upgrade the engine
The engine needs a carburettor. Gil and Boza have it.
- Pay 50 coins, or
- Trade three Harpooner carcasses.
The carcass route is cheaper if you can fish predators. The coin route is faster if you have been selling Snapper.
Install the engine at the dry dock. The speed difference is immediate.
Materials to hoard
| Material | Why |
|---|---|
| Metal plate | Modules, lures, repairs |
| Coral fibre | Still, hull, recipes |
| Adhesive slime | Repairs, still |
| Chromatic scales | Rainbow Fin, crafting |
| Iron barrel | Still, crafting |
| Rope | Tools, repairs |
Sell fish, not materials. A few coins are never worth a crafting bottleneck.
Common beginner mistakes
Selling metal early. You will need it for the first boat module.
Ignoring the radio. The traders are the quest hub.
Fishing with the wrong lure. Earthworms for Snapper; Wind-Up Tin for Softgazer; predatory bait for Harpooners.
Reeling a fresh fish. Wait for it to tire or the line snaps.
Sailing at night without a spotlight. You will hit something.
Skipping the dry dock. The engine is the main progression gate.
What to do after the opening
Once the engine is installed, explore toward the Throat. Harvest coral, hunt Harpooners for the carburettor trade and build a coin reserve.
The demo walkthrough covers the full route. The boat upgrades page covers the order. The money page covers the economy.
