DREADMOOR Demo: Content, Length and How to Play
The DREADMOOR demo is a free 3–4 hour standalone slice with its own questline, dry dock and island region. What it includes and how to install it.
Quick answer: The DREADMOOR demo is a free standalone download on Steam (appid 5219790). It contains a self-contained questline in the Slough, a trading settlement, several islands, fishing, crafting, a dry dock and a boat upgrade path. A first playthrough runs about 3–4 hours, and progress does not carry into Early Access.
This page is based on demo version 0.3.39, played in late October 2026. The Early Access build may change names, costs and quest order.

The demo is not a cut-down tutorial. It has its own opening, its own debt to the traders at Betsy & Sons, and its own ending at the gate out of the starting region. Dream Dock's studio site lists the demo alongside the main game. That makes it a useful preview and a genuinely awkward one to rush: the demo teaches systems you will use for the whole game, then stops just as the map opens up.
"Take the helm of a fishing trawler and explore a world flooded by a catastrophic human mistake." — DREADMOOR on Steam
How to install the DREADMOOR demo
- Open the DREADMOOR Demo store page.
- Select Download (the demo is free and does not require the base game).
- Install and launch it as a separate app. It will not appear inside the main DREADMOOR library entry.
- If you played an earlier playtest, delete the old Saved folder before starting. The October demo changed enough that old saves can misbehave.
The demo supports the same 12 languages as the main game, with English and Russian voice acting. It is playable on Steam Deck but was not Steam Deck Verified at release. The Steam Deck page covers what that means in practice.
What the demo includes
| Content | Included |
|---|---|
| Opening story and the Slough | Yes |
| Betsy & Sons trading post | Yes |
| Angler's Island and coral gathering | Yes |
| Boat repair and dry dock | Yes |
| Engine and hull upgrades | Yes |
| Normal and predatory fishing | Yes |
| Crafting and blueprint research | Yes |
| The Throat generator puzzle | Yes |
| Sludgebet and the wider map | No |
| Co-op or multiplayer | No |
The demo's main quest chain sends you from a wrecked shack to the trading post, then to a submerged memorial island, back to the dry dock, and finally to the Throat. Side content includes gathering adhesive slime, repairing John's moonshine still, buying back a carburettor and experimenting with lures. You can ignore most of it and still finish, but the boat upgrades make the last section much less painful.
How long is the DREADMOOR demo?
Expect 3–4 hours for a first run that reads dialogue and explores the islands. A focused run that knows the quest order can finish in about two hours. The demo has no timer and no penalty for sleeping through the night, so the pace is yours.
The length comes from travel and fishing rather than cutscenes. Sailing between the trading post, Angler's Island and the Throat takes real time, and the fishing minigame is not instant. If you only want to see the story, the demo walkthrough lists the quest order and the two puzzles that stop most players.
Does demo progress carry over?
No carry-over has been announced. The demo is a separate app with its own save folder, and Dream Dock has not described an import path into the Early Access build. Treat everything you earn as practice.
That is not a reason to skip the demo. The opening hours teach line tension, predatory fishing, fuel production and the dry dock sequence. Starting Early Access with those systems already understood is worth more than a few hundred coins.
The demo's fuel larva eats fish meat. It is easy to convert every fish you catch into fuel and then have nothing to sell. Keep a few valuable fish for the traders, especially before the carburettor purchase.
Where the demo ends
The final quest is Set Out! — restore power at the Throat, route water to both wheels and sail through the gate. The screen after that confirms you finished the demo and teases the drowned world beyond.
Nothing after the gate is playable. Sludgebet, the Baron and the deeper waters are mentioned but not shown. If you want to know what happens in the story up to that point, the ending explainer covers the lore without pretending there is more content than there is.
Demo vs Early Access
| Demo | Early Access | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free | $19.99 |
| Region | The Slough and the Throat | One major region at launch |
| Story | Opening arc, ends at the gate | Continues past the demo |
| Boat upgrades | Engine, hull, basic modules | Full module list, incl. afterburner |
| Save carry-over | None announced | New save |
| Release | Out now | 9 November 2026 |
The Early Access page explains what the developers say is finished and what will change. The short version: core loop complete, one region, 6–12 months of planned work.
Performance in the demo
The demo runs on the minimum GTX 1060 tier at 1080p with medium settings, and it is heavy on fog and water shaders. Shader compilation on first launch is long. If the image looks washed out, check the colour-correction and gamma settings before turning down resolution; the game's default fog does a lot of the visual work.
The full system requirements list the CPU, GPU and 60 GB storage target. The demo download is smaller, but the Early Access install will need the full space.
